Land Transport Amendment Act 2014 (The BAC Bill)
The BAC Bill to lower the adult drink-driving limits was introduced to Parliament in December 2013 and referred to a Select Committee for public scrutiny and feedback through submissions.
The Bill went before the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee. The Committee considered public submissions received on the Bill before reporting back to Parliament by 3 June 2014.
The Bill proceeded through its remaining Parliamentary stages and was passed into law on 8 August 2014. The lower adult drink-driving limits came into force from 1 December 2014.
Further information on this Bill is available via the Ministry of Transport website.
Call for Action on Alcohol
Thirty-seven New Zealand leaders from health, education and the churches have put their names to a Call for Action on Alcohol. The statement called on the incoming government of 2014 to enact legislation necessary for the following four priority actions to decrease the demand for alcohol, a central part of the 5+ Solution:
- Phase out alcohol advertising
- Phase out alcohol sponsorship
- Institute a minimum unit price for alcohol
- Increase the tax on alcohol
(See background paper for the rationale).
Submissions open for Alcohol Advertising & Sponsorship Forum (submissions now closed)
The Ministerial Forum on Alcohol Advertising & Sponsorship was convened to consider whether further restrictions on alcohol advertising and sponsorship would reduce alcohol-related harm.
A six-week consultation period sought submissions from affected stakeholders, experts on advertising, sponsorship, alcohol and health, and the public.
Submissions cited evidence about the impact of alcohol advertising and sponsorship, including the effectiveness of any proposed interventions in reducing alcohol-related harm.
The forum was particularly interested in receiving evidence that emerged since the Law Commission reviewed this issue in 2010.
It reported to the Minister of Justice and the Associate Minister of Health with evidence-based advice and recommendations
Submissions closed 5pm, Monday 28 April 2014.
