Good morning,
Just a quick email to let you know out the outcomes of Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s Alcohol review. As a stakeholder your input has been appreciated. Thank you.
The Western Bay of Plenty District Local Alcohol Policy 2022 and Alcohol Control Bylaw 2022 have both been adopted.
The decision story, which sets out how we got to this point, is on our website at: https://www.westernbay.govt.nz/council/plans-policies-strategies-bylaws/decision-stories .
The key changes are:
- Policy changes
- Alcohol stores (off-licences – this includes bottle stores, grocery stores and supermarkets) will not be able to sell alcohol past 9pm across the Western Bay of Plenty district.
- No new licences will be issued for bottle stores across the Te Puke-Maketu ward (except where an existing store changes hands or moves to a new premises close by).
- Bylaw change
- The public alcohol ban zone (Alcohol Control Area) is extended to the whole of the Te Puke urban area, not just the town centre. This is consistent with Katikati and Waihi Beach/Athenree.
The Bylaw will come into force on 6 May 2022. The Local Alcohol Policy will come into effect on 21 August 2022, to allow time for formal notification and for businesses to prepare for any changes. Council will contact impacted licence holders before the changes come into force.
The adopted Policy and Bylaw can be viewed online at: https://www.westernbay.govt.nz/council/plans-policies-strategies-bylaws/a-z
Council also resolved to address alcohol related harm through a number of other processes outside of the Bylaw and Policy.
Please get in touch if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
